SURROUNDINGS OF AQUILA APARTMENTS
The apartment complex is located at the border of Willemstad. The center of Willemstad has recently been placed on the world heritage list of UNESCO.
Along the center harbour, and all over Curacao, there are many renovated buildings, including harbour houses, agricultural and colonial estates, all worth a visit. Many of the old "landhuizen" (agricultural estates) are converted into restaurants, providing excellent food and live entertainment. Along the harbour, where gigantic cruise ships pass by, the many terraces are an ideal location to relax, have a cold drink or lunch and enjoy the views over the harbour entrance.

The world famous "Pontjesbrug", a floating bridge that can be moved like a boat, is also worthwhile a visit. Take a stroll over the bridge, and when the bridge is opened to give harbour access to a sea vessel, take the free ferry boat back.
A couple of minutes drive take you from AQUILA Apartments to the beautiful beaches in the south as Barbara Beach, Caracas Bay, Jan Thiel Bay, Spanish Water Lagoon and the famous Mambo Beach. Close to Mambo Beach is the Seaquarium, where a large variety of sea animals can be seen. The south coast of Curacao has over 35 beaches and bays that can be accessed for relaxation or swimming.
The rough northern coast is less accessible. The ever present northern wind creates a rather rough and less inhabited coast but has the beautiful scenery of Boca Tabla, where the waves from the ocean splash roughly against the cliffs.
A surfer´s paradise is found at Playa Kanoa on the north coast. There is also a small beach, harbour and restaurant at this secluded but idyllic area.

Further away, to the west of Willemstad, there are many other beaches along the south coast. Some can be reached easily by road, less accessible secluded beaches will take some searching and travel by dirt road. The complete southern coast is covered with excellent diving opportunities. Many dive operators take divers to the best sites. Most of the dive spots are accessible from the beach. For non-divers, the Seaquarium is recommended for views of the under water coral reefs and it´s beautiful inhabitants as well as larger sea inhabitants.
To the north-west, the Christoffelpark, a large protected natural park, is woth visiting. The park is a nice area for mountain biking, horse riding, or simply have a relaxed stroll through the natural scenery. Mount Christoffel, a hill actually, can be climbed for a better view of the surroundings.

Seaquarium
See the complete underwater scene without getting wet! Swim, dive or snorkle with dolphins for a unique experience.

Hofi Pastor
A pleasant forest walk, with the highlight in the shape of the oldest cotton tree of Curacao. Try the local drinks at the entrance.

Flamingo sanctuaries
Flamingoes can be observed on several places on the island within protected areas. Ask for the best locations.

Ostrich Farm
The Ostrich Farm is located close to AQUILA. All generations can be seen, from the small ones coming out of eggs through to large ones you will run for/after, ugly ones ....More African wildlife is expected as the park extends. There is also a restaurant with a nice terrace, where you can try the ocal specialty-ostrich.

Private zoo?
All around our accommodation lovely birds, lizards and iguanas can be seen. Birds of all colors, kolibri´s, adopted and named lizards (Chris) and several iguanas (the largest one lost it´s tail but doesn´t seem to bother), please drive slowly on the premises to protect our zoo!.

Christoffelpark
The views from the mountains in Christoffelpark are superb. On the pictures the view over Shete Boca National Park is presented. Advice, if you take the "Jeeps only" route with a Toyota Corolla, please take sufficient passengers with plenty of energy for pushing.

Boca Tabla
Shete Boca National Park has many odd rock formations along the coast, formed and contineously attacked by the ever present northern waves.

Personal preferences:
Close by KFC and Subway can be found, as well as several chinese restaurants (take away). Special recommendation is earned by the restaurant
Landhuis BRAKKEPUT MEI MEI, excellent dining in a nice atmosphere. On sundays there is a supervised childrens playing area.
Restaurant the GOUVERNEUR in Otrobanda deserves to be named because of the perfect breezes, shady terrace, overlooking the water and giving a magnificent view of Punda harbour houses. Excellent food and service.
